We arrive in Tangier from Rabat by car
The 2 cities are linked by a highway in good condition. No driving problems. There are a few clean and welcoming gas stations. In one of the stations, we saw a ticket office for a ferry to Spain.

On the way, moving away from the big cities, you will see rural landscapes of Morocco, which are a complete change from the modernity of the city of Rabat.
As soon as you enter Tangier, you can see that the city’s port plays a central role.
At first, we chose to spend 2 nights in Tangier and 1 night in Casablanca before leaving for Marrakech. But, because we had to manage a 9-month-old baby, we skipped the Casablanca stopover and stayed 3 nights in Tangier.
We chose to stay in a residential area. The accommodation is an apartment in a residence on the outskirts of the city. It costs less than a hotel with the advantage of having a kitchen, washing machine … which is practical when traveling with a baby.
On the other hand, the disadvantage is the distance to the city (5 km). But with the rental car, it’s not that bad.

We arrive at our accommodation:

The apartment is clean, spacious and well equipped. It’s perfect for spending 3 nights in Tangier. We go out for dinner towards the city center and we stop in the most famous square in Tangier: Grand Socco. The Grand Socco or the place of April 9, 1947 is a historic round square. It separates the old medina from the new city center of Tangier.
We choose a restaurant at random: « Chez Moustapha« .

It is a popular restaurant, offering tagines and grills. The food is good, and above all, we are seated on the terrace with the place of the Grand Socco for entertainment, and it is great.

It is the end of our day, we return to our appartment for the night.
We go for a drive to the Hercules Cave and Cap Sartel.

We arrive at the Hercules Cave. This natural curiosity is a famous tourist spot. These are limestone caves with a special shape. Legend says that Hercules took refuge there after completing his exploits. He is said to have created the Strait of Gibraltar by moving the mountains.
The weather is really not helping to make the visit. A strong wind is blowing and with the baby sleeping in the car, it is impossible to wake him up and take him out in such weather. I go to discover the place without going into the cave.

I arrive in a central square with a beautiful view of the ocean

There is the entrance to the cave

We continue our tour by car to the famous meeting point of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean (35°47’16.1″N 5°55’37.8″W)
The Mediterranean Sea on the right, the Atlantic Ocean on the left, it is a magnificent viewpoint. But, still with a wind of rare violence that day 😦

We continue our way to Cape Spartel (Ras Spartel). This cape marks the southern entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar. Its construction was completed in 1864 to avoid the shipwrecks that were frequent at the time.

This area of Tangier is beautiful, with breathtaking landscapes and views. We loved this tour despite the impossibility of doing the visits due to the weather.
We leave towards the city center, at the Grand Socco square. We find an underground car park in the heart of the city. It’s perfect: Parking Sidi Bouabid (35°47’02.6″N 5°48’51.7″W)

The parking lot is located in the basement of a small, lively shopping mall.
We go to the city’s central market located a few steps away to discover the local daily life.

Before strolling through the beautiful streets of the Medina

For lunch, we choose a well-rated restaurant and we do not regret our choice : Restaurant Ahlen (35°47’07.0″N 5°48’35.6″W)

We continue our tour in the splendid Medina.

We finish our tour and return to our apartment. Evening program: Rest
We wake up quietly and discover a rainy weather with a very thick fog. We take a drive along the corniche and in front of the municipal beach.
It’s a not cool to have such fog for this tour. But, we can imagine the beauty of the place under a blue sky on a sunny summer day.

Constrained by the weather, we finish our tour in a shopping center (Tanger Mall) before going to eat at a well-rated restaurant: « Chez Hassan Bab Kasbah »

We return to our appartment to rest. We understand that Tangier is a beautiful city, but whith a sunny weather.
