Aswan, The Nubian Village

And also to look in the daylight at the nubian wall drawings.

Aswan, The Nubian Village

The inhabitants of the Nubian village are known for raising small crocodiles in their houses. They explain to us that they do it because it symbolizes strength. But we understand that it is essentially a way to attract visitors and make them pay for the photos. With our 2-year-old who loves these reptiles, we choose to visit a house called « Crocodile House« . If you are interested, you can give around 20 EGP to take a photo and everyone is happy (except the crocodiles, they do not seem to appreciate these cages)

Aswan, The Nubian Village – The crocodiles

We return to our hotel, which founds us transport in an air-conditioned Van to the Aswan train station for $15.
It is certainly possible to find a much cheaper means of transport, but with the sunny hot weather, the luggages, our child starting to get tired, we do not even negotiate.

We are off to the train station. Our sleeping train to Giza is scheduled to depart at 4:20 p.m.

Departure from Aswan

We arrive at the station, just opposite, there is an entrance to the Aswan market that we have already visited. But you can find snacks there (Can be a good idea before a long journey by night train)

Aswan Market

We leave Aswan and Upper Egypt towards Lower Egypt.
We loved this region of the country, authentic, surprising, welcoming and stimulating. We leave with wonderful memories in our heads in the hope of returning one day to discover even more of this delicious region.

PS: Other ideas for visits to Aswan:

  • The unfinished obelisk: one of the historical and curious monuments of Egypt. A pillar of pink granite lying down that was never finished.
  • The Nubia Museum: Intended for the Nubian civilization which underwent a vast relocation during the appearance of Lake Nasser. Entire villages were swallowed up.
  • The Monastery of Saint Simeon: Visible from the east bank of the Nile. It is a monastery with beautiful architecture on top of the hill on the west bank. It is the most important Christian monument built in Egypt

Some places to try:

  • Café Wasat El Daera
  • Old Nubian Guest House Philae & Restaurant (not far from the Philae temple)
  • Bob Marley Moonlight (Elephantine Island)
  • Makka Restaurant: Traditional and nice restaurant in the city of Aswan

We had bought our night train tickets a week ago when we passed by Luxor train station.
We took a double cabin from Aswan to Giza at 1400 EGP (27 €) per person.
For the same price, it is possible to get off in Cairo (last stop).

Sleeping train – Price

PS: the prices displayed are not up to date

Our train is on time, 4:20 p.m., we’re off to Giza. Expected arrival at 05:10

Sleeping Train

It is an old train. Let’s go for an adventure. The comfort is rudimentary. The toilets with very questionable hygiene. But we do not regret our choice. It is an experience that we absolutely wanted to live

Sleeping Train

A meal upon departure as well as a breakfast tray are included in the price.

Night train – Meals

At the start, seats are present in the cabin. But, are transformed into beds after dinner by the train staff. A second bunk bed is folded down to make the double cabin.

Night train – Cabin

The journey is not very comfortable with the noise and the train shaking all along the trip. But we remember the positive, it is thanks to these little misadventures that we build travel memories. We manage to have a few hours of sleep before arriving in Giza after 14 hours of train
