Our accommodation

We decided to visit Budapest at the last minute (15 days before our departure). We were able to find a nice and a well-placed accommodation, 300m from the metro station: Kálvin tér. There is also a 100E bus stop at this station serving Budapest Airport.

The accommodation is a Guest House with a few bedrooms and a well-equipped and well-maintained shared space (kitchen, showers, bath, toilet, washing machine, stove, dishes, living room, umbrellas, etc.).

The entrance is secured by a digital code. Once inside the building, you will find a large courtyard shared between a few habitations (including our Guest House). There is a small garden, with tables and chairs. We really highly recommend :

To and from the airport

By Bus :

It is the cheapest and very simple way to reach Budapest city center from the airport. Once out of the airport, between terminals 2A and 2B, you will find the bus station. There are 2 bus lines:

100E: airport – city center
The frequency is between 10 and 20 minutes from 05:00 to 01:20 from the airport and from 03:40 to 00:40 from the city center. The journey takes approximately 15 minutes.
The ticket price is 900 Ft ≈ 2.8 € and it is not included in the transport packages. The ticket can be purchased from the BKK (Budapest public transport company) terminal right next to the buses
In the direction of the city center, the bus stops at 3 stations: Kálvin tér, Astoria and Deák Ferenc tér.

200E: airport – Nagyvárad tér (terminus of the M3 metro line)
Every day from 4:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. with a frequency of 20 to 30 minutes. The journey takes around 40 minutes with a lot of stops compared to the 100E bus.
The ticket price is 350 Ft ≈ 1.1 € and is included in the transport packages.
The ticket can be purchased from the same BKK terminal right next to the buses.

Use public transport in Budapest

Budapest has 4 metro lines (M1, M2, M3, M4) and 5 Hév (suburban train) lines (H5, H6, H7, H8, H9). These lines are operational from 04:30 am to 11:00 pm. The metro stations are impressive:

We recommend you to use the metro line M1 which remains very authentic and charming

Budapest has also 35 tram lines which run between 4.30 am and 11 pm (with line 6 which operates 24 hours a day).
Special mention for line 2 of the tram which runs along the Danube. It is considered as one of the best tram lines in the world for the view it offers of the parliament and the Buda Castle.

Buses and trolleybuses (electric buses) cover a very large part of the Budapest transport network. They run from 4.15 a.m. to 9 p.m. (or 11.30 p.m.).

The prices applied in 2019 for all the means of transport already mentioned are as follows :

We took a 72H package for HUF 4,150 (€ 13) per person

You can buy your tickets at ticket offices or ticket machines at the station entrances. Beware of the controllers who are almost at the entrance to all metro stations.

The price increases if you wish to go out of Budapest with the suburban train:

The Hungarian currency

The Hungarian currency is the Forint (HUF or FT: Hungarian Forint)
In December 2019, 1 € ≈ 315 HUF.

There are many exchange offices (especially on two large avenues in the city center):

  • Teréz körút Avenue (between Oktogon and Blaha Lujza tér squares)
  • Rákóczi út Avenue (between Blaha Lujza tér and Astoria squares).
